Composite Consultancy

Optimised Composite Components

Using composites opens a world of possibilities to engineer strong, stiff and lightweight components. Engenuity’s composite consultancy exists to make sense of these opportunities to optimize the design of composite parts. The three critical areas we work in are defining accurate load cases, selecting and characterising composite materials and using state-of-the-art engineering analysis tools to define the best geometry and construction.

Engenuity has used these capabilities to help win Formula 1 World Championships, improve the performance of road cars without adding any cost, and applying composite components to areas where metal used to be the only option.

STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF COMPOSITES

Engineering analysis should be used for all structures right through the design process. From an initial idea and optimising the design all the way to correlating with the results of a final validation test. It is vital the correct techniques are used depending on the load case and structure. Engenuity has the latest software tools for linear static, non-linear implicit, full dynamic explicit, vibration and modal analyses.

SIMULATION OF SMC AND CHOPPED FIBER COMPOSITES

Engenuity’s FiRMA (Failure in Random Material Architectures) is an industry leading tool for analysis of SMC (sheet moulding compound) composites. These materials are a high manufacturability, low cost solution to producing composite parts, however the properties of the final part have a random element depending on the orientation of the fibers after moulding.

FiRMA allows modelling of this random effect to give a distribution of strengths and stiffnesses for the given geometry. Traditionally these materials are modelled on a ‘worst case’ basis, leading to the design of uncompetitive, overweight components.

MODELLING OF COMPOSITE CRUSH USING CZONE

Composite structures have great potential for efficient energy absorption in crush. For accurate predictions it is vital to not only have the data on how the material behaves in crush, but also to accurately model both the crush zone and the forces generated by the crush on the rest of the structure.

Engenuity provides both the material characterisation and analysis so you can develop composite crash structures with confidence.
